CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

Eden rubbed her breastbone, but the stranglehold on her heart didn’t loosen. She closed her eyes as if this would block out the hurt and anger. Why did the last person she wanted to talk to keep insisting they did, but the man she’s been waiting to hear from had ghosted her? She took a deep breath and focused on the current phone call.

“Please tell me you didn’t give my phone number to my mother,” Eden begged her abuela.

“Por supuesto que no. But maybe you call her? Your madre is no longer drinking.”

“I don’t care. It doesn’t erase what she did to me while drunk.”

“No. But grief had broken her. Alcohol made her a monster. She has conquered both,” Abuela said gently.

“And I’m just supposed to forget and forgive?” Eden let out a harsh breath.

“Cariño, this is about you letting go of your hurt, so you can move on.”

“Oh, I’ve moved on.”

Her abuela made a sound Eden was familiar with; it said she didn’t believe her but didn’t want to argue. “Maybe take her number. In case—”

Eden tilted her cell away from her ear. Someone was knocking on her front door. “Hold on sec, Abuela.”

It was probably Olivia. They’d made tentative plans. Eden thought about canceling because of her sour mood. She was bitter from the combination of this conversation and two freaking days of Tate ghosting her.

She swung open the door. Olivia’s gaze traveled to Eden’s cell. “I’m early. Should I come back later?” she asked.

Eden shook her head and stepped aside. “Come in. It’s my grandma, but she’s leaving for a doctor’s appointment in a few minutes. Give me a second.” Humoring her abuela, Eden wrote her mom’s phone number on scrap paper. Then promptly threw it in the junk drawer as they said their goodbyes. “Where are your kids?” she asked Olivia after hanging up.

She held up a baby monitor. Heavy breathing and grunts crackled from the machine. “Thankfully they haven’t discovered how to crawl from their cribs yet. I’m surprised Ana hasn’t. She’s almost three. But she’s content to play until Dasia wakes. Anyway, is it okay I didn’t call first? When they crashed at the same time, I didn’t want to miss the opportunity to adult with you.”

“It’s fine.” Maybe a friendly distraction was what Eden needed. She pointed to the kitchen. “Do you want something to drink?”

“No, thanks.” Olivia tilted her head. “Are you sure it’s okay I came over? You look stressed.”

“I’m very sure. Please, sit down.” Eden settled into her favorite overstuffed armchair. “I’m finding it difficult to concentrate. I’ve had a crappy week at home and work.”

Olivia sat on the end of the couch closest to Eden. “What happened?”

She skipped over her disappointment with Tate and the aggravation surrounding her mom’s plea that they talk and voiced another worry. “It seems like every time I talk with my grandmother, she’s going to one doctor’s appointment or another. She tells me she’s fine, but I’m worried. She keeps mixing up names and confusing dates.
